Flexing more playoff-like form, the Douglas College Royals women’s soccer team did this past weekend what didn’t seem likely a month ago. The defending league champions racked up two more wins and clinched first place in the PacWest circuit.

They just needed one drive to get it done. The Royal City peewee Hyacks knocked off the North Shore Panthers 7-0 last week, with Callum Rogers touchdown proving to be the only score of the game.

The conditions were less than ideal – unless you love the slop. Kevin Calhoun and Sandra Walter emerged first overall in their elite divisions to set the pace at a muddy Queen’s Cross chapter of the Vancouver Cyclocross Coalition race.

In a duel for top bragging rights in the PacWest women’s soccer circuit, the Douglas College Royals expected a tough battle last week with rival Langara University. It was, and it wasn’t.

The New Westminster Hyacks have absorbed all the lessons possible during a bye week. On Friday, they bring it onto the Mercer Stadium field as they host the No. 3-ranked Vancouver College Fighting Irish (7:30 p.m.).

Evan Pattison’s third quarter dash proved to be the decisive touchdown in the New Westminster junior Hyacks’ 32-28 victory over the Notre Dame Jugglers last Thursday, avenging a loss served up on the senior side a week earlier.

It’s early, but a 2-for-2 start to the season is something to feel good about. The Simon Fraser University women’s golf team picked up its second victory, topping the Western Washington Invitational on Tuesday in Bellingham, Wash.

Forward Andrea Perrotta proved instrumental in a successful turnaround for the Douglas College Royals, engineering a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Capilano Blues in PacWest women’s soccer action last week.

They struck first, and even got the last word in scoring-wise, but it was all the offence between those two points that weighed down the New Westminster Hyacks in last Friday’s B.C. High School senior AAA football game.

A trio of players with New Westminster connections were among the 26 players chosen to suit up for Team Canada at a pair of field lacrosse exhibition games in Denver later this month.
