Mud sets tone at Queen's cyclocross

The conditions were less than ideal – unless you love the slop. Kevin Calhoun and Sandra Walter emerged first overall in their elite divisions to set the pace at a muddy Queen’s Cross chapter of the Vancouver Cyclocross Coalition race.

Calhoun, of North Vancouver, completed his 13.23-kilometre course in 1:03.38, beating out England’s Marc Edwards by 41 seconds. In third place was Parker Bloom of Victoria.
In the women’s elite, Coquitlam’s Walter took the prize with a decisive time of 50.25 on a 9.45km course. In second place was North Van’s Kelly Jones, while Janna Gillick of Nanaimo was third.
New Westminster sisters Susanna and Lilly Ujfalusi earned spots on the podium in their respective divisions – Lilly, second in women’s under-17, and Susanna, second in women’s u13.

In men's masters division, Vancouver's Graeme Martindale finished first, edging out North Van's Kim Steed and Vancouver's Cory Forrest. In 32nd spot was New Westminster's Karl Bridge.

Mark Karan of Vancouver topped the single speed open category, finishing ahead of Dave Struthers. In intermediate men's combined, Quinn Storey of Burnaby, 16, topped the 9.45km track, ahead of Vancouver's Paul Moffat. Placing 12th was Burnaby's Jackson Lovett, while New Westminster's Justin Turcotte finished 22nd. Moffat's time proved good enough to win the intermediate men's event, edging Drummond Lawson of Vancouver. In men's under-17, Storey was first, beating out Vancouver's Evan McBeath, while Ethan Holmes, also of Burnaby, finished third.

In men's beginners combined, Lief Rodgers, 14, of Port Moody topped the 5.67km course, placing ahead of VAncouver's Jonathan Schwarz. In fourth place was New West's Nicholas Ethier, while Sean Solheim of Burnaby finished 12th. Schwarz would take the men's novice title, edging out Maple Ridge's Ivo Rytir. Rodgers was also triumphant in the men's u15 division, whle Cam McCallum of Langley topped the u13 division.

On the women's masters side, Megan Sheffer placed first, ahead of Vancouver's Alyssa Myshok.

PIcking up the women's intermediate combined title was Katrinna Roth of Vancouver, crossing the line ahead of Kristin Kit of Victoria. Lindsey Von Bloedau of Vancouver placed third, while New West's Lilly Ujfalusi came in seventh. In the women's u17 race, West Vancouver's Bronwen Campbell completed the 7.56km race with the best time.

In the u15 event, Josie Welbourn of North Van was the winner, finishing ahead of Burnaby's Meghan Holmes.

Geza Rodgers of Port Moody topped the women's u13 race.

In women's beginners combined, Kate Drew of North Vancouver put in the best time, beating out Alanna Dyck and Pamela Troyer of Vancouver.
