Building off a strong performance at the provincial Age Group championships, the Hyack Swim Club delivered the goods earlier this month at the Canadian Age Group swimming championships in Calgary.

You could say the New Westminster Salmonbellies are built for speed. But the Maple Ridge Burrards had the equivalent of a tiger in the tank in its13-9 victory over New West on Tuesday in Game 1 of the best-of-seven semifinal at Queen’s Park Arena.

So much promise, so many goals – the New Westminster junior Salmonbellies’ season appeared loaded with both. Unfortunately, the Delta Islanders were loaded for bear.

One team played with more urgency than the other. The Maple Ridge Burrards buckled down and built up an early lead then held on, toppling the New Westminster Salmonbellies 13-9 in Western Lacrosse Association action on Sunday.

The score didn’t tell the whole story. The New Westminster Majors All Stars season came to a halt last week in a 20-8 defeat at the hands of the eventual Little League B.C. provincial champion Whalley Chiefs.

The Hyack Swim Club rode a strong wave of performances at the B.C. Age Group championships to finish second overall last month in Victoria.

Tests of character can bring out the best in a team.

The 2016 Canadian Olympic team was officially announced this week, featuring 313 athletes from across the country.

It didn’t end the way they planned. But the experience proved better than imagined. The members of Team B.C.

With first place still in their grasp, the New Westminster senior A Salmonbellies have two games left to close the deal.
