Varsity Hyacks hit the gridiron in search of a championship win

Time management is one of the areas Justin Goodwin seems to have a handle on.

From word of mouth to bonding as a team, a quintet of New Westminster teenagers came together to play key roles at the B.C. Aboriginal Soccer championships last week in Prince George.

The Royal City Hyacks Orange flag football team ventured to Surrey and returned with some hardware, after going undefeated at the Bronze Boot tournament.

Big, fast, skilled and hungry. As descriptions go, these could describe many hockey coaches’ wish list. For the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs’ coach Jamie Jackson, the players he’s assembled fit the above bill, and then some.

It often comes down to chemistry. A key to building a winning soccer team isn’t that much of a secret – just ask the Vancouver Whitecaps management. Victories and losses often come down to chemistry – either of the good, or bad kind.

The marathon has begun, but don’t be surprised if there isn’t a little Usain Bolt-like sprinting done over the next two weeks.

All that was achieved last year – the program’s first provincial banner, the team and individual hardware – is old news. The focus now is on the here and now for the Douglas College women’s soccer team.
