Three Burnaby athletes made the shortlist for Sport B.C.'s 46th annual athlete of the year awards.

The Grandview Steelers moved a point out of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League divisional cellar with a couple of wins last week.

The New Westminster Salmonbellies announced the appointment of Sheldon Palidwor as an assistant coach with the senior A lacrosse club on Jan. 6. Palidwor takes the place of Troy Poelzer, who stepped aside from his coaching duties.

It was back to work for the B.C. Hockey Northwest Giants major midget hockey team.

The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team split its West Coast weekend road trip. The Clan opened with a 66-53 victory over Western Oregon last Thursday but lost its Saturday matchup in Lacey, Washington 6457 to the Saint Martin's Saints.

The New Westminster Hyacks won their second high school girls' basketball tournament this season.

Kyle Turris scored his first goal for the Ottawa Senators in a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Jan. 5. Turris tallied the eventual game-winner at 17: 07 of the second period.

The Burnaby Winter Club Bruins outscored the London Junior Knights to win the AAA major atom division at the 2012 Bell Capital Cup in Gloucester, Ont. on Dec. 31.
