Molly Marineau was that kid out in the yard, getting her hands dirty while she built little cities out of grass and earth. She was also the kid rearranging cans in the grocery store aisles to make them look more organized.

New Westminster was well represented at the 2018 Ovation Awards. The awards, presented for the best musical theatre in the Lower Mainland, were handed out during a gala on Sunday, Jan. 28 at the Vancouver Academy of Music.

The talents of New Westminster Secondary School students are on display at Plaskett Gallery in February. Hyack, a mixed media exhibition, runs from Feb. 1 to 27 at the gallery at Massey Theatre.

Time is ticking for writers who’d like to win $1,000 for the best New Westminster story. LitFest New West is accepting submissions to its short story fiction writing contest until March 1.

WHAT’S UP? Artist Focus Day Camp, a program for kids at Anvil Centre, offered during the second week of spring break. WHO’S IT FOR? There are two sessions: one for seven- to 11-year-olds, and one for four- to six-year-olds.

SAVE THE DATE: Feb. 10 Massey Madness WHAT’S UP? Massey Theatre is hosting the Massey Madness Family Arts Fest on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tina Turner fans, check this one out … the Queen of Rock herself may not be coming to New West, but this is certain to be the next best thing.

ON NOW To Saturday, Jan. 28 Arts Council of New Westminster presents works from the permanent collection, at The Gallery at Queen’s Park, with work in a variety of styles and mediums. Gallery open Wednesdays 1 to 8 p.m.

Van Dop Gallery is once again celebrating love in all its forms. The gallery is holding an open house on Saturday, Feb. 10. Love It: Celebrating Love and Friendship features the work of jewelry artist Joanna Lovett.
