Dear Editor: I attended on March 23 the New Westminster council meeting at which the May Queen and Royal Knight positions were selected for 2015.

"My memory is an awesome treasure, yours is an archaic oppressive tradition." That, of course, is a gross simplification of the current debate over the Lancers' dance and May Day in general in this city.

Dear Editor: I'm very saddened that the city has decided to change a historical tradition. (Removing the Lancers dance with May Day court). One of the reasons I fell in love with New Westminster was because of it's time-honoured traditions.

Dear Editor: Port Metro Vancouver hasn't tried really hard to tell us about it, but they want to expand shipments of low-grade, dusty American coal through Fraser Surrey Docks for sale to Asian markets.

Several events last week served as timely reminders that, sooner or later, there has to be a discussion about tax policy in this country and in the provinces. One fiscal year ended, and another one began.

Dear Editor: I am deeply disturbed at council's decision to axe the Royal Lancers. The City of New Westminster is steeped deeply in tradition and heritage. To axe this tradition makes no common sense.

Dear Editor: It seems the folks at New West City Hall believe that if they repeat the same - dare I say - lies often enough people will come to accept them as truth.

The New Westminster school district deserves an 'A' for effort and a big pat on the back for getting its financial house in order and addressing some much-needed issues in the classrooms.
