British Columbians have been nimble in adapting their individual actions to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our communities over the last ten months, and it has had a big impact.

Editor: I was disappointed to read in the Nov. 12 New Westminster Record that the drums are starting to beat for changing the fireworks bylaw in favour of banning fireworks in this city.

It’s time for tough love in British Columbia. From the onset of the pandemic, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix have been the “ cool parents ” as far as public health officials go in Canada.

As the number of COVID-19 cases in this province dramatically escalates, it is difficult not to envision a return of some of the tighter measures we experienced when this pandemic first began.

Editor: The staggering increase of new cases of the COVID-19 pandemic's second wave is scary for most of us, especially at the onset of the flu season.

The narrative of some who are trying to downplay COVID-19 are that it only harms the elderly.

Editor: Can we consider a positive side of fireworks at Halloween? For some families this is a long-time tradition; it was definitely part of my childhood. One of our neighbours always had fireworks, hot dogs, and hot chocolate for all us kids.

Editor: I write regarding the suggestion of banning fireworks. I’m not a fan of personal fireworks per se, but I’m really not a fan of banning things just for the sake of it. No doubt that fireworks are loud, smoky and moderately risky.

Over the past 10 or 15 years, much has been done by many people to help tell the story of the Korean War. This war, like all others, was a terrible event which took such a heavy toll of human lives both civilian and military.

The completed U.S. election served as a reminder of how much healthier the political discourse is in this province.
