Whether you’re looking to lose weight or just eat healthier, changing your eating habits can be a daunting experience. Ali J. Chernoff, a Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Consultant working with Royal City Health & Manual Therapy, knows all about the effort needed to change food choices.
“We’re talking lifestyle changes,” says Ali. “It’s not something you can successfully do in 24 hours. Many of our clients have been skipping breakfast for decades, for example. This isn’t something you’re going to change overnight.”
Conveniently located in Royal City Centre Mall in New Westminster, Royal City Health & Manual Therapy offers a full range of health care services, including chiropractic, massage therapy, physiotherapy, clinical counselling and nutrition advice.
“It’s a holistic approach,” Ali explains. “It’s all about lifestyle. Everything is connected: eat well, sleep well, and have a daily exercise routine.”
Ali has been involved in the field of nutrition since 1993. She offers dietitian services to schools, sporting events and teams, as well as family nutrition counselling. Ali also offers food tours that focus on shopping for families, in addition to nutritional education relating to diabetes, and the importance of understanding food labels.
“Sadly, the rules governing what appears on nutrition labels don’t help translate what’s in the ingredients,” she notes. “Cereal is a great example: a nutrition label might say it’s made from ‘whole grains.’ That could just be a fancy way of saying ‘white flour.’ We help people interpret the labels.”
Ali recommends booking an initial consultation to get started on a healthier nutritional lifestyle.
“The initial consultation takes about an hour,” she explains. “We talk about what’s going on in your life, from your eating habits to your work schedule, to your workout preferences. We ask about your medical background, because it’s not just about eating. It’s about changing your lifestyle.”
Also in that first hour, Ali will make sure you understand what a proper portion size is.
“Not many people truly understand what a serving size actually looks like,” she says. “So we discuss that right off the bat. Then we’ll send you home with a little homework and ask to see you again within the week, because the first session is an exploratory time to find out why you’re here and what are your nutrition goals. Then we start working on one goal at a time.”
