As the Great Teachers War of 2012 winds its way to an inevitably bitter conclusion, it's worth brushing aside the overheated rhetoric and exploding a few myths as we watch events unfold.

DEAR EDITOR: Parents want their children to have a positive, successful experience in school. Teachers want their students to be excited about learning and flourish in school and, by extension, in life. In short, both want the best for children.

DEAR EDITOR: My name is Luke McAndless-Davis, and I am a Grade 11 International Baccalaureate student from New Westminster Secondary School. B.C.

DEAR EDITOR: We Canadians like to believe we're a different bunch than our neighbours south of the border.

The minister of finance framed the 2012 budget using the theme of fiscal prudence in uncertain economic times, but this can't be further from the truth.

Dear Editor: The sustainable alternative to the proposed Enbridge pipeline is not twinning the Trans Mountain pipeline and increasing tanker traffic in Burrard Inlet.

Dear Editor: I am a retired senior, 85 years of age. This letter is to Mayor Wayne Wright, whom I voted for every year since he became mayor. This is in regards to the announcement that city residents face a 2.5 per cent tax increase.

Congratulations to the staff and students of those New Westminster schools - and to all members of the wider Royal City community - who proudly sported the colour pink on Wednesday as part of Pink Shirt Day.
