A resident enjoys a stroll past a Shine Bright New West light display in Queen's Park.

Enjoy some of the Shine Bright New West features that are happening around town. Shine Bright light displays are running until Jan. 31, 2023 in neighbourhoods throughout the city. You can find all the locations – as well as details about some end-of-year performances taking place at Anvil Centre and several Lunar New Year events and activities that are happening in January –  at www.newwestcity.ca/shinebright.

Check out some of the beautiful holiday lights that residents have set up for all to enjoy. You only have to take a stroll or drive through many neighbourhoods to find displays that catch your eye. Record readers have suggested some of their favourites (a house at the corner of Massey Street and Churchill in Massey-Victory Heights and a house at Eighth Avenue and 16th Street in the West End). The house at 609 Robson St. (just off of Sixth Street near Third Avenue) is a perennial favourite. (Tip: If you’re driving to that one, park on Sixth Street so you don’t have to manoeuvre your vehicle on the small dead-end street.)

Watch one of the new movie releases at Landmark Cinemas 10 New Westminster – you’ll find it in the Shop at New West on the SkyTrain level (390-800 Carnarvon St.) For tickets and show times, go to www.landmarkcinemas.com/new-westminster.

Soak up some fresh air and get outdoors for a walk. Now that the snow has (hopefully) melted or sidewalks have been cleared – and your holiday gatherings are wrapping up – it’s a good time to get moving. Whether it’s a stroll along the downtown waterfront or Queensborough perimeter trail, a walk on the trails in Queen’s Park or Glenbrooke Ravine Park, you’re bound to feel better after a walk about town.

Take a spin around the ice at Moody Park Arena (701 Eighth Ave.). Public skates, adult skates and parent and tot skates are being offered between Dec. 26 and Jan. 2. Details about skate times and admission rates over winter break can be found at www.newwestcity.ca/parks-and-recreation/holiday-hours.

Head to the waterfront to enjoy some winter fun at Fraser River Discovery Centre, where Winter Discovery Days runs until Jan. 2. (The centre is closed Dec. 25 and 26 and Jan. 1.) Daily activities will include a drop-in craft with storytime between 1 and 3 p.m. and Hummingbird Habitats-themed activities from Dec. 27 to Jan. 2. Details about activities, hours and admission rates are at www.fraserriverdiscovery.org.
