Winter Discovery Days returns to Fraser River Discovery Centre this holiday season.

Fraser River Discovery Centre is inviting community members to enjoy some winter fun on the waterfront.

The centre, located next to River Market on New Westminster’s waterfront, is holding Winter Discovery Days from Dec. 17 to Jan. 2. (It’s closed Dec. 25 and 26 and Jan. 1.)

“Every year we put on a celebration of the holiday season at the FRDC, and we’re happy to do so this year as part of Winter Discovery Days,” said Stephen Bruyneel, the centre’s director of eternal relations and development. “We will have a range of festive, family-friendly fun that encourages how we might protect riverside ecosystems and craft seasonal gifts to spread some cheer.”

Daily activities will include a drop-in craft with storytime between 1 and 3 p.m., as well as opportunities to play a jumbo board game to learn about local ecosystems in the wintertime and to learn about animal adaptations to the cold by making a den or finding a place to camouflage around the building.

Snowy Science, running from Dec. 17 to 24, gives visitors an opportunity to learn how snowflakes form and model the surprising array of snowflake shapes. They’ll also have a chance to see if they can figure out which critters have been tromping through the snow.

From Dec. 27 to Jan. 2, visitors will be able to take part in Hummingbird Habitats, where they’ll learn how hummingbirds survive the winter, build a hummingbird habitat and find out how to help these flashy fliers through the cold season.

“Our public health and safety protocols remain in place, including masks for all visitors aged five and older,” Bruyneel said. “However, pre-registration is not required.”

Winter Discovery Days will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 788 Quayside Dr. Regular admission fees will apply.
