Don't throw out those empties — donate them to the Class of 2023

After a successful bottle drive in 2022, NWSS is holding an event for the Class of 2023 on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023.

If you’re clearing out your empties, the Class of 2023 at New Westminster Secondary School would be thrilled to take empty beverage containers off your hands.

The NWSS Dry Grad Bottle Drive is taking place on Saturday, Jan. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 820 Sixth St. Grads will be at the NWSS parking lot, in front of the school’s main doors, to receive your recyclable deposit beverage containers.

A list of accepted containers can be found at www.return-it.ca/beverage/products.

NWSS parent Dayna Mudie said the bottle drive is one of the biggest fundraisers for the dry grad event.

She said the goal with the fundraising is to keep the cost to the grads for this event minimal.

“We are hoping to keep ticket cost similar to last year, however the cost of putting on the event is much higher this year,” she said in an email to the Record. “The dry grad event itself is a big highlight for the grad classes and provides a night of fun, entertainment, food, socializing and memory making in a safe and sober environment.”

Mudie noted that the pandemic negatively impacted the current grad class’s high school experience so the committee hopes to make the dry grad a very memorable event for students as part of their graduation celebrations.”

It's early days for the dry grad committee’s fundraising efforts, with other restaurant fundraisers and a pub night planned for 2023. An account has also been set up at Return-It for folks who cannot make the Jan. 7 event.
