New Westminster is considered to be one of Canada's most livable cities.

The city was ranked 18th on The Globe and Mail's annual top 100 list for 2023, based on factors that included access to amenities, education, transportation options and community vibrancy.

In B.C., New Westminster was labelled as the 10th most livable city by the Globe, placing behind other communities like Victoria (1), North Vancouver (2), Vancouver (7) and Port Coquitlam (9).

The highest national individual ranking for the city in the featured categories was fourth for education opportunities — second in all of B.C. behind Victoria.

New Westminster is considered to be the eighth-best city in Canada (fourth in B.C.) for transportation and ninth (fifth in B.C.) for accessing community amenities.

However, when it comes to housing affordability, New West dropped to 302nd nation-wide on the list and 27th provincially.

New Westminster's average household income is more than $114,000 and posts an average monthly rent of $2,007.

The city is also ranked 13th on the Globe's list of most livable cities for entrepreneurs based on economic factors, low commute times and low taxes.

As well, it's 15th on livable cities to raise kids based on proximity to child care, housing and education.

New West's top five economic industries, based on the Globe's findings, are as follows:

  1. Health care and social assistance
  2. Retail trade
  3. Professional, scientific and technical services
  4. Educational services
  5. Accommodation and food services

The top 100 most livable cities list was compiled by journalists Mahima Singh and Chen Wang.

The data was collected from 439 cities with a population of 10,000 or more by Environics Analytics Group and the company's "third-party licensors."
