George, a white sturgeon, is a popular feature at Fraser River Discovery Centre.

Ghosts of the Fraser will be taking centre stage at this month’s Super Saturdays at Fraser River Discovery Centre.

The Feb. 26 event will take a look at one of the most interesting and mysterious creatures living in the Fraser River – the white sturgeon. Super Saturdays is a regular series of public programs that celebrate different aspects of the Fraser River.

“This month we’re headed underwater and taking a look at the largest fish that inhabit the Fraser River – white sturgeon,” said Stephen Bruyneel, the centre’s director of external relations and development. “These shy fish can live for decades and grow over six meters long, but face many dangers before they reach adulthood, from hungry salmon to water pollution and climate change. To find out more, join us for this month’s Super Saturday at the FRDC.”

The next one Super Saturday is on Saturday, Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. 4 p.m. at 788 Quayside Dr.

Visitors will learn all about the so-called “ghosts of the Fraser”, including:  how the white sturgeon is so well-adapted for survival in the murky waters of the Fraser River;  their fascinating life cycle, using real sturgeon specimens; and the kinds of dangers they face by playing Fraser River Discovery Centre’s own survival board game.

“All ages are welcome for this Super Saturday, although these activities are best suited for families with children aged six and up,” Bruyneel said. “Everything will also be consistent with our COVID health and safety plan. Pre-registration is recommended. A BC Vaccine Card showing full vaccination for those over 12 years old is required and masks must be worn at all times for visitors aged six and older.”

Fraser River Discovery Centre, located on New Westminster’s waterfront, offers a variety of programs and exhibits related to the Fraser River.

Held on the last Saturday of each month, Super Saturdays is a series of public programs featuring family-friendly activities. Super Saturdays are free with admission to the galleries, but pre-registration is recommended at www.fraserriverdiscovery.org.
