BC Housing is negotiating a possible lease for a space for an emergency response centre, according to a recent report to council.

City staff are continuing to work with BC Housing on a new space for an emergency response centre that could accommodate 40 to 50 guests, states a Feb. 1 report to council from the COVID-19 pandemic response task forces.

“The ERC would be (the) subject of a temporary use permit, as this use is not permitted under the current zoning for the site,” said the report. “If a lease is negotiated and a permit approved, the ERC would be operational for an 18-month period.”

From May to July 2020, a 40-space emergency response centre was located in the Massey gym at the old New Westminster Secondary School, where it provided temporary shelter for people deemed to be “super vulnerable” to getting COVID-19 and succumbing to the illness.
