New West businesses are offering special menu items and discounts as part of Cinco de Mayo

Here’s something that could make your happy Friday happier.

Friday, May 5, also coincides with Cinco de Mayo. While the day commemorates a historic victory against France (in the 1862 Battle of Pueblo) for Mexico, it serves up the perfect occasion to dance, drink, and celebrate Mexican culture for the rest of us.

Wondering how to celebrate the day beyond just noshing on tacos and guac? Lucky for us, some New West businesses are offering festival-fit margarita slushies, churro doughnuts and taco discounts.

Here’s a roundup of different ways to sync your Friday with the annual Cinco de Mayo bash.

Have a churro doughnut at YUM Gourmet Donuts

For those who love tacos and doughnuts equally, here is a marriage made in heaven: churro doughnuts.

YUM Gourmet Donuts, which has previously brought out unique offerings such as a Sapperton cream or mango coconut doughnut, is joining in the Cinco de Mayo celebrations by adding the churro doughnut, inspired by the Mexican fried sugar- and cinnamon-topped pastry, and yet another with a tres leches flan filling, on this week’s menu.

Both doughnuts are priced $5.25 and under. A box of six doughnuts is $27, and a box of 12 is $52.

YUM Gourmet Donuts is located at 468 East Columbia St.

Enjoy a spicy pineapple margarita wine slushy at Pacific Breeze Urban Winery

If you are a wine person, here’s your best shot at enjoying a drink that fits the Cinco de Mayo vibe — a wine tequila slushy.

Pacific Breeze Urban Winery has come out with a limited-time spicy pineapple margarita wine slushy that not only looks like the perfect tropical patio drink but is also an appropriate one to sip on as part of the festival.

While the slushy offers the best of both spirits, feel free to follow it up with the winery's all-wine spring-summer drink, the Watermelon Frosé

Pacific Breeze Urban Winery is located at 320 Stewardson Way.

Enjoy discounts on taco trios at Georgie’s Local Kitchen and Bar

This might be the best time to give in to that perennial craving for tacos.

Georgie’s Local Kitchen and Bar is offering $2 off of their taco trios on Friday, May 5 — which, if you didn't already do the math, is the perfect cue to grab extra servings of their chipotle chicken, pulled pork and baja fish tacos.

The eatery announced on Instagram that it will also be offering $1 off on Coronas and $5 tequila shots on Cinco De Mayo Day.

And if you find yourself feasting on their tacos past dusk, you might as well stay back for “Georgie’s After Dark” when the eatery and bar transforms into a happening dance floor.

Georgie’s Local is located at 250 Columbia St.

Join a Cinco de Mayo-themed party at Sapperton District Taphouse

If Friday celebrations weren’t enough, get ready for round 2.

Reserve your Saturday night for a Cinco de Mayo-themed party at Sapperton District Taphouse. While the event offers a fun night out for pub goers, it marks the start of something new at the Sapperton neighbourhood’s watering hole.

As per the taphouse’s Instagram announcement, the Saturday party would be the first of many such themed parties at the venue.

“#SappertonSaturdays” will feature DJ KC (Kultar Chohan) mixing up upbeat tunes to warm up the stage for a wild night of partying that starts every Saturday at 10 p.m.

Sapperton District Taphouse is located at 421 East Columbia St.
