Not sure whether your child’s symptoms require a COVID-19 test?

There’s an app for that.

The B.C. government has unveiled a new health-checker app as part of its updated health and safety protocols for schools, unveiled Feb. 4.

The app gives students and families a chance to check their symptoms (either online or via mobile app) to determine what steps they should take.

It lets the user choose the student’s grade (K-5, 6-8 or 9-12) and then select from a list of primary or secondary symptoms. Primary symptoms – such as fever higher than 38 C, chills, cough, loss of sense of smell or taste, or difficulty breathing – may lead to a recommendation for a health assessment, while secondary symptoms (sore throat, loss of appetite, extreme fatigue, headache, body aches, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea) may lead to a recommendation to stay home until symptoms clear.

The province is continuing to deliver the message that everyone with any symptoms, however mild, should stay home and not attend school.

Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside reiterated that advice during a media briefing held Feb. 4 to introduce the province’s new health and safety guidelines.
