Glenbrook Middle School reports second COVID-19 exposure of 2021

The up sides: The list of school exposures in New Westminster since the winter break remains short, and the turnaround time for notifications is much better than it was in the fall

Glenbrook Middle School is reporting its second COVID-19 exposure of 2021. Someone with the virus was in the school all five days last week: Feb. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Glenbrook Middle School has seen its second COVID-19 exposure of 2021 – nearly a month after the first one.

Someone who has since tested positive for the virus was in the school all of last week, Feb. 1 to 5, according to the Fraser Health school exposures website this morning. The school previously reported an exposure on Jan. 4, the first day of classes following winter break.

The two Glenbrook exposures are part of a relatively short list of exposures in the New Westminster school district since the break. That list includes:

  • Home Learners Program: exposure Jan. 5
  • Queensborough Middle School: Jan. 11
  • Herbert Spencer Elementary: Jan. 25
  • Fraser River Middle School: Jan. 27, 28 and 29
  • New Westminster Secondary School: Jan. 26 and Feb. 1

One positive sign for local schools is the length of time it’s taking to receive notifications about exposure. In the fall, turnaround time had become an area of concern, with some notifications arriving 10 or more days into the 14-day monitoring period.

Now, however, notifications are generally being turned around within a few days.

Sarah Wethered, president of the New Westminster Teachers’ Union, noted that in one of the recent local cases, the exposure happened on a Friday and she had notification in hand by Monday.

“I do welcome that, and I hope that that continues, that those exposure notices come quite quickly,” she said.
