As a city, New Westminster hovers between a sense of reverence for the past and plans for the future. During the past few years, some residents have touted the "new" New West while others have firmly supported the traditional Royal City.

May 14, 2013 An open letter to the school trustees of New Westminster, Cuts to counselling: We are writing in response to the cuts to elementary and middle school counselling positions for this next school year of 2013/14.

Dear Editor: Re: I'd say the results are good for the province and not good for New Westminster, The Record, May 15. I am not sure who said the above - Paul Forseth or Hector Bremner. It does not matter who said this or who we voted for.

The great thing about political punditry is the ability to be right and wrong at the same time and get away with it, which is why the pundits who were no better at predicting the outcome of the B.C.

Dear Editor: The pollsters, and even the New Democrats, did not take into account the advantages of incumbency, while Christy Clark's Liberals were all too cognizant of its disadvantages.

Well, I was wrong. Along with pretty much everyone else (with the exception of a small B.C. Liberal Party campaign brain trust), I thought the election last week was going to produce a result exactly the opposite of what actually happened.

Dear Editor: I was pleased to see a Hyack Festival insert in the May 17 edition of the Royal City Record; pleased until I saw a major omission from the schedule of events.

Dear Editor: I want to clarify a misconception that appears to be prevalent among some of the parents in New Westminster Minor Hockey - just because your child played hockey last season he or she is not guaranteed a spot to play.

The images of devastation out of Moore, Oklahoma this week catch at the heart. Children pulled out of a collapsed school. Entire neighbourhoods flattened. A barren, empty space where a daycare used to be.

Dear Editor: I congratulate the City of New Westminster on selecting what is quite possibly the worst place to erect a digital advertising sign.
