The strata I call home recently voted to do our bit for climate control by passing a resolution to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We did this by installing an electrical outlet for each owner so that they could install a Level 2 electric vehicle charger. This was our small step to help our strata, our community, our city, our province, our country and the world to reduce our adverse effect on the climate.
Along comes the city, specifically New Westminster Electrical Utility, to prove the old adage that “No good deed shall go unpunished." Upon receiving our first bill for the installation it was noticed that we were being charged 1.5 cents more per kilowatt hour for our green initiative than for residential use. Upon contacting the New West billing department they informed us that this was a commercial rate, complete with a higher minimum monthly rate and the subsequent increase in taxes and levies.
The politicians can proclaim their support for mitigating carbon emissions, but it all rings hollow when they charge a premium for doing the right thing.
