Letter: Let's rethink street sweepers spewing diesel fumes

What if we replaced unnecessary pollution with manual labour?

Streets being swept by hand? It was a common sight in Morocco, and New Westminster could benefit from making better choices, says this letter writer.

Editor:

I sat in Queen’s Park recently watching diesel-engine-powered equipment street sweeping in New Westminster. These machines run all day, unnecessarily polluting our air.

It is disappointing to have diesel-engine-powered equipment polluting our air like this.

I was impressed to see citizens keeping streets clean by sweeping streets by hand when visiting Morocco with family. Manual work like this is much healthier and more responsible than our sedentary, mechanized ways.

If we are serious about protecting the air we breathe and the environment, we need to reconsider our choices and the changes we need to make.
