Letter: Income-based traffic fines a 'ridiculous' New West idea

This writer says the idea of tying traffic fines to income would be "invasive" and "unfair."

Everyone who gets pulled over for a traffic violation should be treated the same, this writer says.

Editor:

In regard to the recent proposal from New Westminster Mayor Patrick Johnstone to fine traffic offenders based on their income, I must say this is one of the stupidest and most invasive proposals I've ever heard.

First of all, this would require that citizens caught breaking traffic laws would be forced to hand over proof of how much they earn, which is supposed to be a private matter, between the citizen, her or his employer, and Revenue Canada.

And, secondly, it would give lower money earners a green light to break certain traffic laws, knowing they won't have to pay too much in fines.

The traffic laws are for everyone to obey, and giving certain folks a break on fines, while crucifying other folks for the same infractions, is not only unfair, it's absolutely ridiculous.
