Letter: Bike lanes unfair to New Westminster businesses

Do cyclists really use the bike lanes on Seventh Avenue? This letter writer isn't convinced.

The debate over bike lanes in uptown New Westminster doesn't show any signs of slowing down.

Editor:

My hat goes off to the owner of Beach House on Sixth Street for attending this week's council meeting.

She was there to object to the $36-million bike lane project. She showed up to discuss how it was affecting her and other shops' bottom line and safety issues, only to be dismissed and rushed to finish by the mayor.

This and the previous mayor and council continue to argue that the traffic-congesting bike lanes are used by many, Hundreds of people in the Queen's Park area of New West is a small fraction of the 80,000 people that reside here.

I have lived on Seventh Avenue for 12 years and can say that the bike lanes are not well used, as most bike people do not ride in cold or wet weather and most fair-weather riders do not use the bike lanes on Seventh Avenue and ride right down the middle of the street.

We as a city can only hope that this council will stop telling us and forcing these tax-dollar-wasting projects for the sake of "what's good for the Queen's Park area is good for all of New West."
