With temperatures continuing to soar into the weekend, the City of New Westminster has announced a series of “outdoor park features” that will reopen starting on Saturday.
But New West residents are being reminded to practice physical distancing measures while using these spaces.
Starting Saturday, May 9, the following park features will begin to reopen: outdoor tennis and pickleball courts, lacrosse boxes, skate and all-wheel parks, artificial turf fields, and Mercer track.
Playgrounds, basketball and volleyball courts, outdoor fitness circuits, and spray parks will remain closed until further notice. All off-leash dog parks and park washrooms are currently open.
Residents are reminded that they must continue to adhere to proper precautions including:
- Keeping at least two metres (six feet) away from people from other households;
- Avoiding large groups and gatherings, including no organized sports or games;
- Washing hands thoroughly and frequently;
- Limiting their use of the amenities at busy times;
- Staying at home if ill or exhibiting symptoms.
“Now more so than ever, getting outside and being physically active is essential for the physical and mental well-being of our community. We are gradually reopening park amenities to give residents more recreation options,” said Mayor Jonathan Coté, in a news release. “I want to remind everyone to use these amenities safely and responsibly and to continue to follow the orders and recommendations of the Public Health Officer.”
“The city’s Physical Distancing Champions will be monitoring parks and outdoor spaces, including the riverfront, to ensure that individuals are following safety measures and directional protocols,” said a news release. “Signs reinforcing this messaging are posted at these locations and park users are required to follow these measures to help ensure our parks are safe and can remain open.”
The City of New Westminster continues to monitor and follow the orders and recommendations from local health authorities and will slowly reopen other recreation amenities in a phased approach when it has been deemed safe to do so.
