Top 5 finishes for two New West women in Olympic qualifying event

Two New West women were among the contenders vying for spots on Canada’s Olympic team.

Grace Fetherstonhaugh and Katelyn Stewart-Barnett both competed in the recent Olympic steeplechase trial race for a chance to be on Canada’s Olympic team.

Ceili McCabe of Vancouver earned the opportunity to represent Canada at the Paris 2024 Olympics in the 3000-metre steeplechase after recording a time of 9:32.97.

The two New West athletes made it into the top 5 of the women’s 3000-metre steeplechase at the recent 2024 Canada Olympic track and field team trials in Montreal.

Fetherstonhaugh, 23, was third, with a time of 9:43.13. Stewart-Barnett, 21, was fifth, at 9:55.73.

The steeplechase event features a 3000-metre race, in which competitors face barriers such as a water jump.

The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics will run from July 26 to Aug. 11.
