The New Westminster Senior A Salmonbellies are in a four-way tie for second place in the Western Lacrosse Association after three games in the 2023 season.

The Bellies won their first two home games of the season – both by 15-6 scores – defeating the Nanaimo Timbermen in the May 25 home opener and downing the Coquitlam Adanacs on June 1. On May 31, the Bellies lost 9-7 to the league-leading Langley Thunder at the Langley Events Centre.

As of June 6, the Thunder, which has three wins and one loss in four games, sits on top of the WLA standings with six points. The Bellies, the Victoria Shamrocks, the Maple Ridge Burrards (all having played three games) and the Timbermen (four games) are tied for second place with four points each. The Adanacs and the Burnaby Lakers have yet to win in the 2023 season.

In the June 1 win over the Adanacs, Salmonbellies captain Mitch Jones led the way with three goals and four assists. He was named the Stonehaus Realty’s Player of the Game and first star.

Kevin Crowley’s hot streak on the home floor continued, as he had a six-point night with three goals (all in the third period) and three assists. Haiden Dickson scored four times for the Bellies, while singles came from Ryan Martel, Patrick Shoemay, Will Malcom, Anthony Courcelle and Noah Armitage.

For Armitage – who played his minor lacrosse career in New Westminster – it was his first goal for the Senior A Salmonbellies.

The Salmonbellies’ next game is on Thursday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Queen’s Park Arena, when they’ll take on the Maple Ridge Burrards.
