This New West bite takes the breakfast sandwich to a whole new level

Maple doughnut, bacon, cheese and fried egg? That's a yes.

That ominous lurking face in the background belongs to East End Bureau chief Snickers, who's attempting to steal her staff's maple doughnut breakfast sandwich from Yum Gourmet Donuts in Sapperton. And who can blame her, really?

Four words, people: Maple. Doughnut. Breakfast. Sandwich.

That's it. That's all you need to know. That, and the fact that the above-mentioned sandwich is available to you right here in New West, if you hustle on down to Yum Gourmet Donuts in Sapperton between 10 a.m. and noon.

The doughnut shop has been luring folks in to its small, sweet-smelling premises at 468 Columbia St. since March 2022, when John McMahon and pastry chef Kim Collishaw opened their bricks-and-mortar location.

Since then, it's been building a reputation as one of the places to go for doughnuts that are a cut above the ordinary — using Collishaw's special brioche dough and complex flavour profiles, with a long list of both filled and non-filled offerings that change weekly.

The Record's Monday visit found filled flavours including blueberry cheesecake, coffee crisp and caramel apple crumble, plus "regular" (if indeed such a word can be applied to these doughnuts) flavours including mango coconut, chocolate cookie peanut butter, raspberry lime and the zesty lemon (named for its neighbour, the Zesty Lemon Clothing Co. down the street).

Plus, of course, that breakfast sandwich. Newly added to the menu in January, the sandwich uses Collishaw's maple glazed brioche doughnut as the bun, adding in a generous helping of salty, crispy bacon, white cheddar and a freshly fried egg for a mound of sweet-salty-soft-crunchy goodness.

So much goodness, in fact, that I got distracted from my original mission, which was to discover if they had any Valentine's Day offerings (yes, indeed, they do), and happily waited the five extra minutes for McMahon to make up a sandwich. (They're freshly made to order, so you can call ahead to have it ready, or just wait on the spot.)

You can order them between 10 a.m. and noon on the store's opening days, Thursday through Monday.
