A maintenance worker called police alleging he'd been threatened by a man with a knife who was breaking into a storage locker.

New West police located a knife after a maintenance worker at a Brow of the Hill apartment said he’d been threatened by a man with a knife who was breaking into a storage locker.

According to police, a maintenance worker at a building in the 900 block of St. Andrews Street called police about 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2 after noticing damage to a storage room door and seeing a suspicious person inside the storage room.

“As police arrived on scene, they observed a man matching the suspect description running out of the front entrance to the condominium. The suspect was arrested for break and enter without incident,” said a press release from the New Westminster Police Department. “A maintenance worker who was working in the building advised police that the suspect threatened him with a knife as he was running out of the building. Officers located a knife in nearby bushes.”

New Westminster police have recommended break and enter and assault with a weapon charges against the suspect.

The incident has prompted a suggestion from the New Westminster Police Department.

“To address break-ins, managers of multi-family buildings are encouraged to reach out to our crime prevention coordinator for a security audit, as there are environmental design choices that can decrease the likelihood of criminal behaviour,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar said in a  news release. “In addition, residents are encouraged to call police when they see criminal behaviour inside their buildings.”
