A residence on 12th Street was behind caution tape in January 2022 after police responded to reports of shots fired.

One of the suspects charged in connection to a shooting on 12th Street in 2022 has pleaded guilty to firearms charges.

Around 5 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, members of the New Westminster Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at a home in the 400 block of 12th Street.

“Multiple shots were fired into the residence, and the suspects fled the scene,” said a NWPD news release. “Thankfully, no one was injured as a result of the shooting.”

Numerous specialty units assisted in collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and canvassing for CCTV footage. After several months of investigation by the police department’s Major Crime Unit, three suspects were arrested and charges were approved relating to attempted murder and firearms offences.

“We are committed to protecting our community and keeping our neighbourhoods safe from people who choose to shoot bullets into New Westminster homes,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “The police and the community will not stand for such reckless actions.”

In August 2022, the police department announced Justin Crowchild, 40, and Danica Ulmer, 43, had each been charged with one count of attempt to commit murder with a weapon.

The New Westminster Police Department is now reporting that during his trial in October of 2023, Crowchild pleaded guilty to unlawfully discharging a firearm and possession of a firearm. He received a 729-day sentence for discharging a firearm and a six-month sentence for possession of a firearm.

According to the NWPD, Ulmer’s case is still before the courts, and the third person who had charges approved in connection to this investigation died before trial.

In a January 2022 news release, the police department stated that the occupants of the home were inside at the time of the shooting. Following the incident, New Westminster police said it was believed to be a targeted shooting and there was no increased risk to the public.
