Oh, hello winter! New West may see 5 centimetres of snow today

Travel carefully, as some roads are slippery this morning

Take care out there this morning, New West.

Mother Nature decided to give the Lower Mainland an early Christmas present today – and things are a little slippery out there this morning.

New Westminster residents awoke to a light dusting of snow that has grown progressively heavier through the morning commute. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement that notes the possibility of up to five centimetres of snow for Metro Vancouver, including New Westminster.

Schools remain open, and transit service is operating – though some morning delays and cancellations have been reported (notably routes that travel to Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain). Transit users are advised to check the status of their route before heading out.

The City of New Westminster also has trucks out keeping routes clear. Roads are addressed on a priority basis, with priority given to major transportation routes (roads such as Eighth Avenue, 10th Avenue, Cumberland Street, Sixth Street, Eighth Street, Front Street, Columbia Street and Stewardson Way), transit routes, hospital and school zones, and city facilities.

Secondary roads will wait longer. If you're wondering where your street falls in the pecking order, find more information at the city's snow removal priority map online.
