The New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society is contributing to efforts to support Terry Fox’s dream of finding a cure for cancer.

Dr. Kathy Jones, who has been organizing the Terry Fox Run in New West since 2008, is grateful to the folks who supported the annual run on New Westminster’s waterfront on Sunday, Sept. 17.

Jones is also thankful for the support from the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society, which provided a “huge” cheque in support of the cause this year.

“I don’t ask the NWFFCS for a donation every year,” she said, “but whenever I do, they always support the Terry Fox Foundation in keeping alive Terry’s legacy and dream for finding cancer cures.”

This year, the charitable society donated $1,000 to the Terry Fox Run in New West.

“The Terry Fox Run in New Westminster is a local event that we see echoed around the Lower Mainland, nation and the globe,” said the society in a statement to the Record. “None of the work our charitable society does will ever match the foundation that Terry Fox established with his Marathon of Hope, but we try to aid local community endeavours, and we feel this is the epitome of our community rallying around a great cause.”

The charitable society said it’s happy to sponsor the event. Local firefighters are looking forward to continuing its fundraising efforts through events like the shred-a-thon, Christmas tree chipping and Hydrant Cup charity hockey game between the New West firefighters and Vancouver Canucks Alumni teams.

“All proceeds from our events go back to the local community of New Westminster, and the Terry Fox Run is just one of those great causes,” said the statement.
