New COVID-19 cases in New Westminster dropped significantly last week, according to the latest data from the BC Centre for Disease Control.
BCCDC data show New Westminster had a total of 50 new coronavirus cases between Jan. 31 and Feb. 6 – down from the 85 new coronavirus cases between Jan. 24 and 30. By contrast, Richmond had 45 new cases during the same period despite being a community of 215,000 people compared to about 70,000 in New West.
The number is below the 60 cases logged between Jan. 17 and 23. New West had 82 cases from Jan. 10-16.
There is currently a COVID-19 outbreak at Royal Columbian Hospital, but the city’s worst outbreak is at the long-term care centre Royal City Manor. As of Feb. 4, that care home has had 122 cases, with 99 of those being residents. Of the residents who have gotten sick, 22 have died. There was also a new case reported at the Carnarvon Safeway location involving a staff member.
New West had 967 cases between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2020.
