Dozens of people were dragon hunting near city hall on Saturday.

Pokémon Go players descended on the area around New Westminster City Hall and Friendship Gardens on June 25 to capture Deino, a dark- and dragon-type Pokémon. Deino could also be found at other Pokéstops on Saturday.

“Everybody is here for a Pokémon Go Community Day,” explained Kayley Brunton. “That means that there is a specific Pokémon who is out in the wild in a greater number, in a greater frequency, and everyone is out to catch that Pokémon.”

A notice on pokemongolive.com informed “trainers” that Deino, the Irate Pokémon, was being featured during June Community Day. The event ran from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time.

“Deino will appear more frequently in the wild,” said the notice. “If you’re lucky, you might encounter a Shiny one!”

Brunton, who was among the folks who caught Deino at city hall, said she attended the June Community Day with a friend who is a Pokémon Go enthusiast and to enjoy a nice day outdoors. While it was a hot summer day, there was plenty of shade and a bit of a breeze in the area next to city hall where many folks gathered to catch Deino.

Launched in July 2016, Pokémon Go is an augmented reality game played on iPhones and Android devices in which participants search for various Pokémon.

Back in the summer of 2016, Pokémon Go players descended on Westminster Quay, which was a great place to catch Pokémon as it was a “lure spot.”

Pokémon Go was so popular in the summer of 2016 that the City of New took advantage of the craze by offering a special walking tour. In addition to catching Pokémon, some historic sites around town, including the former CPR railway station and a mosaic about the Great Fire of 1898, were doubling as Pokéstops.
