Get ready to bundle up again: New West is about to get hit with a blast of Arctic air.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Metro Vancouver, including New Westminster and Burnaby, warning of a cold spell that’s on the way for most of B.C.
“Arctic air will invade B.C. beginning overnight Friday, with a major shift in temperature from our mild January,” warns Environment Canada.
Temperatures across the South Coast will be 5 to 10 degrees below normal. Gusty winds will accompany the cold weather, making for wind chills that will make it feel even colder.
Friday morning in New West will start off relatively mildly, with a mix of sun and clouds and a morning temperature of 3 C, warming to 7 C by the afternoon, the Weather Network projects.
Saturday, however, is expected to see the beginning of the cold spell, with a mainly sunny and still-mild day giving way to a -4C overnight temperature.
Sunday, we’re expected to wake up to cold and sunny skies, with overnight lows expected to continue to remain below freezing for the rest of January.
Some wet snow and mixed precipitation are likely to follow as the temperatures start to warm again early in February, the Weather Network says — though, so far, nothing is expected that would rival the big snowfalls we saw in late November and before Christmas.
Environment Canada warns there’s “significant uncertainty” over when regular seasonal temperatures will return.
