Richmond high school students pursuing post-secondary education can now apply for the Richmond Chamber of Commerce's annual Carol Young Scholarship.

Named after Carol Young, who built her career at the chamber for 25 years from 1991 to 2016, the scholarship is awarded to local high school students who have overcome significant challenges in their lives.

"Despite challenges they may have faced, they have demonstrated improvement through their work ethic and have inspired fellow students," said the chamber on its website.

The award recipient will receive $2,500 to help kickstart their post-secondary journey, according to the chamber.

Last year's scholarship recipient was Aidan Gibbons, a graduating student from A.R. MacNeil Secondary School.

Although facing challenges living with a visual disability, Gibbons created and led programs to help fellow visually impaired students succeed and demonstrated leadership skills.

The application deadline for the scholarship is May 20.
