In January’s wet, gloomy days, plants visible near windows give more pleasure than anything else in the garden – and the ones close to the shelter and warmth of a house wall always flower earlier than they will elsewhere.

Happy new year! With the new year upon us, it seems like a good time to dive back into the parenting files and offer up a few suggestions for family and kid-related events coming up in New West.

New Westminster firefighters chipped hundreds of Christmas trees under soggy skies. The New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society held its annual tree-chipping event on Jan. 3 and 4 in the Canada Games Pool parking lot.

Tuesday, Jan. 6 Fun, Learning and You, a program for children aged 18 months to five years and their parents or caregivers, 10 a.m. to noon. Offered by the Lower Mainland Purpose Society, the program runs every Wednesday from Jan. 6 to March 23.

Before the break of dawn this Christmas, Karen Maloney left her bed, crept out of her darkened house and drove to Royal Columbian Hospital.
