A New Westminster teacher is marking a milestone birthday by holding a fundraiser for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Tamara Maxim, a teacher at École Qayqayt Elementary School, has joined forces with the school’s parent advisory council to host a virtual, family-friendly yoga class on Sunday, May 2.

It happens to be Maxim’s birthday – and, since she couldn’t have a big celebration thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, she decided to do something to help out the community instead.

“My hope is to bring together the yoga community where I am an instructor, as well as the school community where I am a teacher,” Maxim wrote in an Eventbrite listing. “Together we can practise yoga and raise much-needed funds to help feed people in our communities.”

Participants of all ages are invited to join in the yoga class, either on their own or with household members. Maxim will make the yoga session available on her website after the virtual event.

Anyone who takes part – or who just wants to help out without taking part – is encouraged to make a donation online to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

The class will take place via Zoom on Sunday, May 2 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
