Family Place back in action

New Westminster Family Place is pleased to be back in action at Lord Kelvin Elementary School.

Family Place runs a drop-in for children aged newborn to five years of age every Thursday and Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. at Lord Kelvin Elementary School. The program resumed operation Sept. 12 after summer break.

“It’s a neighbourhood based program that is really taking off,” said executive director Marjorie Staal.“People are enjoying it. There are a lot of moms meting other moms that live nearby. A lot of people are going there. It is a real neighbourhood hub.”

Family Place invites parents and grandparents living in the area to drop by the drop-in, which features play time, circle time and a snack.

“The school has been so supportive,” Staal said. “They help out as much as they can. The space is really amazing.”

New Westminster Family Place also runs a drop-in program Monday to Saturday at its main site at 101-93 Sixth St.

“We are very, very busy,” Staal said. “We are at capacity a number of times.”

In addition to the drop-ins, Family Place offers a resources library, a toy-lending library, parenting programs, a clothing exchange, a monthly children’s birthday party for all the kids having a birthday that month and a program for immigrant grandparents who are in Canada to take care of their grandchildren.
