The New Westminster Symphony Orchestra is wishing Beethoven a happy 250th birthday.

The orchestra’s next concert, coming to Massey Theatre on Sunday, March 1, is themed A Weekend in the Country. It will celebrate both the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven and the 125th anniversary of the creation of Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park.

“Nature is set to music with a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral) that evokes the alpine meadows of Austria, while the Waterton-Glacier Suite by New Orleans composer Michael Rihner does the same for the blue Canadian Rockies and glacial lakes that inspired it,” says a write-up about the concert.

The orchestra will also perform Richard Strauss’ Horn Concerto No. 1, featuring the symphony’s principal French horn, Nick Bartlett.

Admission is by donation.

The concert is set for 2 p.m. Massey Theatre is at 735 Eighth Ave.
