Hipster stereotypes and humanity’s relationship with technology come under the microscope in the next Way Off-Broadway Wednesdays outing.

The Ultimate Hipster is onstage Wednesday, Oct. 24 in the back room at the Heritage Grill.

The show by Spec Theatre features Joanna Rannelli and Beau Han Bridge in a script by Ira Cooper. It takes place at an industry showcase event where a tech entrepreneur from Artisanal Intelligence Inc. is presenting a prototype for the ultimate customer service solution – and his name is Barry.

As a synopsis puts it: “Can you identify craft beer via blind smell test? Do you recognize if the vinyl playing in your neighbour’s apartment is a 78, 45 or 33? Do you type your university essays on a typewriter? Did you build your bicycle from scratch? Barry can. Barry would. Barry does. Barry did. Barry is The Ultimate Hipster.”

The show plays with hipster stereotypes and playfully explores our increasing reliance on technology, while searching for the boundary “between personality and programming, and between artifice and authenticity,” the write-up says.

Way Off-Broadway Wednesdays shows start at 7 p.m., with doors at 6:30 p.m. Admission is by pay-what-you-want donation. Reservations are recommended at 604-759-0819.
