COVID-19 case counts remain low in New Westminster

New West recorded just four new cases in the most recent reporting week, and first-dose vaccination is now at 84%
COVID vaccine
As of July 20, 84% of eligible New West residents aged 12 and up had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The city's case counts remain low, with just four new cases recorded in the most recent reporting week.

COVID-19 case numbers may have taken a turn for the worse in B.C., but the same isn’t true for New Westminster.

While the most recent B.C. numbers (released Friday, July 23) showed case counts had hit 112 in a single day, New Westminster’s numbers haven’t followed the same trend – at least not yet. The latest published data by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control shows New Westminster’s case counts remaining in the single digits, with just four new cases in the most recent reporting period (July 11 to 17).

For the first time, BCCDC data shows test positivity in New Westminster at 0%, down from 1% in the previous week.

The low case counts and positivity numbers continue to run in tandem with high vaccination rates, as New Westminster’s vaccination progress continues to climb upwards. As of July 20, 84% of New West residents aged 12 and up had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

New West remains the second-most-vaccinated area in the Fraser Health region (which covers the territory from Burnaby to Boston Bar) – behind only Delta, which stands at 87%. Surrey has moved to 84% to sit tied with New Westminster.

Amongst people 18 and up, New Westminster’s one-dose vaccination stands at 85%; for the 50-plus crowd, it’s 87%.

VACCINE CLINICS OFFERED

The push is still on to get vaccine into arms – particularly first doses for everyone aged 12 and up.

Fraser Health is offering walk-in first-dose shots at special pop-up neighbourhood clinics and through its main immunization centres.

In New West, a pop-up neighbourhood clinic is set for Tuesday, July 27 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Umbrella Multicultural Health Co-op at 715 Carnarvon St.

Walk-ins are also available at the main Anvil Centre clinic (777 Columbia St.) between 10:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.

Second doses for those who are eligible (people who have received their invitations to book from the provincial Get Vaccinated system or who are at least eight weeks out from their first dose) will also be provided at clinics as capacity and supplies permit.

Check the Fraser Health clinic website for the most current details.
