Folks of all ages are invited to drop by the New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society's annual tree chipping event this weekend - whether or not they have a tree needing to be chipped. The event includes a barbecue, entertainment and more.

1. Recycle your Christmas tree and support local charities at the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society’s annual tree chipping on Saturday, Jan. 4 and Sunday, Jan. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Canada Games Pool parking lot, 65 East Sixth Ave. You can recycle your tree – or you can just drop by to enjoy a barbecue put on by firefighters, entertainment by New Westminster Secondary band students, popcorn and more. It’s all by donation.

2. Enjoy a traditional British panto when Ellie King’s Snow White (The Fairest Panto in all the Land) hits the Massey Theatre stage on Friday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 4 at 3:30 p.m. Info and tickets at www.masseytheatre.com.

3. Support local Scouts by taking your empty bottles and cans to their bottle drive, taking place on Saturday and Sunday at the firefighters’ tree-chipping event.

4. Check out all the final weekend of the Winter Celebrations at Anvil Centre, featuring free entertainment, activities for the family, a lantern labyrinth and more. The celebrations, running until Jan. 5, begin at 3 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends. Details at www.anvilcentre.com.

5. Play games at Rain City Games’ weekly game night at River Market on Friday, Jan. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. at River Market, 810 Quayside Dr. You can choose games from the shop’s in-store library or bring a Rain City Game from home.
