New West kids are being invited to get adventurous.

The Spare Parts Adventure Society is returning to Tipperary Park on Sunday, Aug. 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Once again, kids will have the chance to use donated “spare parts” – such as fabric, PVC pipe, boxes and tires – to build their own playground. Volunteers will be on hand to supervise and assist in cutting materials, but parents are encouraged to step back and watch their children imagine and create on their own.

The group’s first pop-up playground was held in 2016 in Tipperary Park. Previous pop-up playgrounds have seen the creation of forts, boats, tire swings, skateboards, mini-golf courses and more. The activities are free for everyone and open to children of all ages and abilities.

A press release notes that the pop-up playgrounds help kids develop self-reliance by taking risks and allows them to experience active play in barrier-free environments, while developing their problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Spare Parts Adventure also has another pop-up playground event planned for Sunday, Sept. 9 in Grimston Park.
