Kids and kids at heart have been taking to local hills to enjoy some winter fun.

The New Westminster School District cancelled classes on Tuesday (a rarity in New West), with many kids using the snow day as a chance to enjoy some outdoor fun at Queen’s Park, as seen in this Snapped photo by Dale Bottle.

Victoria Hill, Albert Crescent Park and local schools have also been popular sites for sledding during the recent snowfall.

With Richard McBride Elementary School slated to be rebuilt in the years ahead, some residents took time to enjoy some winter fun at the school’s hill while they can.

“Richard McBride Elementary School has an amazing toboggan hill that has been part of the community for many years,” resident Diane Jansen told the Record. “That toboggan hill will be lost when the new school gets built because the plan is for it to right beside that hill. It’s sort of been a community amenity. And it’s a pretty killer hill too. It is much steeper than what you’ll find at Queen’s Park. It’s quite the place.”

Knowing this could be the last year the toboggan run is still intact at the local school, Jansen ventured over to the hill with her teenage son on the weekend.

“It has brought a lot of parents and families together,” she said. “It has definitely been the place to go for tobogganing in Sapperton.”

With flurries being in the forecast for the coming days, New West residents may have more opportunities to go sledding, partake in snowball fights or even go cross-country skiing in the days ahead; one local man was even spotted cross-country skiing on the waterfront esplanade on Tuesday.
