The Society of the Officers of the Honorable Guard couldn’t let VE-Day’s anniversary pass by without some recognition.

On Friday, May 8, members of the Honorable Guard placed a wreath at the New Westminster cenotaph to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE-Day. Victory in Europe Day (VE-Day) was declared on May 8, 1945, signalling the end of the Second World War.

"We as a community have limited public gatherings and maintained safe distance, but we in the guard wished to remember, all those that fell for king and country in WWII and the citizens of the Royal City,  whose names are on our cenotaph who died in the European campaign,” said Rob Rathbun, a member of the society. “I recited the words to King George's speech, that 75 year ago every citizen of New Westminster listened to as the war ended in Europe.”

Each fall, the society coordinates an event that allows community members to help clean gravestones in Fraser Cemetery. It’s also raised funds to purchase headstones for soldiers buried in graves without grave markers.
