Wednesday, Sept. 5

Women on Wednesdays hosing an evening of improvisation and games, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Plaskett Gallery at Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave. Gain confidence in unstructured speaking situations, hone your public speaking skills, practise risk-taking and increase your approachability and authenticity. Family Services of Greater Vancouver hosting Queensborough fall community kitchen for families. Childcare available. Come cook together, make friends and have fun at our free community kitchens. Sunday, Sept. 9

Celebrate International Grandparents’ Day in New Westminster at Grandparents Day Festivities and Stroll, River Market, 810 Quayside Dr., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A fun-filled family event with live music, entertainment, kids’ games and a silent auction, as well as a fundraising walk, silent auction and community info tents. Massey Victory Heights Residents’ Association annual block party, 1 to 4 p.m., Westburnco Park on Churchill Avenue (the grassy area between Scott and William streets). Tons of fun to be had for the whole family: barbecue lunch, bouncy joust, facepainting, games and more.

Saturday, Sept. 15

Paint New West Beautiful, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the fence on Sixth Street and Belmont Street. This free event, organized by Nadine Nakagawa and Mary Trentadue, is accessible and family friendly. All supplies will be provided, but people are welcome to bring their own paint brush. Artists Merril Hall has provide the artistic vision, now the community has to fill it in.

Sunday, Sept. 16

Learn to curl clinic, Royal City Curling Club, 75 East Sixth Ave. (corner of Sixth Avenue and Cumberland Street). Joins us for a two-hour introductory curling clinic, ideal for people with little or no curling experience. Integrating ESL Seniors in our Community, hosted by Family Services of Greater Vancouver. English classes for newcomer seniors to build confidence and learn about community services and fun opportunities in New Westminster. RiverFest 2018, presented by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Celebrate B.C. and World Rivers Day with two Juno-nominated children’s performers, Bobs and Lolo and Ginalina on the RiverFest stage, the Family Fun Zone (inside Fraser River Discovery Centre) the Exhibitor Expo, the New West Craft Artisan Market, the Samson V Maritime Museum, food at the River Market and the Lucille Johnstone Workboat Parade.
