A Metro Vancouver woman was holding back tears inside a Delta store after she won $500,000 playing Daily Grand.

Surrey resident Darlene Tough had phoned her husband right away after scanning the winning ticket and saw the words “$25,000 a Year for Life” flashed on the terminal for the Aug. 26 draw.

“The screen showed congratulations,” said Tough, who scanned her ticket at a Delta London Drugs.

“I was in complete shock and holding back all my tears.”

She added that her husband also become emotional when he saw the screen himself.

Tough’s family recently experienced a fire in their home and had lost everything.

“We had found out everything in our home was a write off,” said Tough.

“We feel like we have to restart our lives all over again. But my husband says it starts a new chapter in our life, and this will help with that beginning.”

Tough matched all five numbers in the Daily Grand draw and opted to take the half-million dollar prize.

The frequent Quick Pick lottery player purchased her Daily Grand ticket at a New Westminster Walmart.

So far in 2021, B.C. lottery players redeemed more than $6 million in winnings from Daily Grand.
