A big third quarter gave the Douglas College Royals all the bump they needed – twice – last week.
The No. 2-ranked men’s collegiate basketball team in the nation, Douglas rallied to defeat the Langara Falcons 99-85 on Friday, then rolled past them 102-87 a day later to move closer to locking up first place in the PacWest league.
Shane Toporowski came off the bench to score a team-high 28 points Friday, as the Royals erased a 44-42 halftime deficit with a huge 34-point quarter.
Toporowski also pulled down 12 boards. Counting 24 points on the night was Courtney Anderson, while Reese Morris chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds.
On Saturday, the two teams were tied 18-18 after 10 minutes, but Douglas garnered a slim five-point edge by the half.
They outscored the Falcons 28-18 in the third quarter to take control.
Reese Morris cashed in 26 points and seven rebounds, while Anderson scored 25 points. Contributing 17 points in the win was Cameron Morris.
The Royals wrap up the regular season this weekend with a pair of home games at New West campus against the Camosun Chargers, 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The Douglas College women’s basketball team earned a split in its series with Langara last week, winning 79-56 on Friday, before falling in a 57-56 heartbreaker on Saturday.
Sydney Fraess tallied a team-high 22 points in the win.
The Royals play Camosun prior to the men’s games, with tip-off at 5 p.m. Saturday and noon on Sunday.
