The New Westminster Hyacks stood toe-to-toe with a couple of ranked rivals to wrap the Centennial Top-10 senior girls basketball tournament on the weekend. Although the unranked squad didn’t come away with a win in either case, they can take comfort in being within range of No. 8-ranked W. J. Mouat and No. 9 Claremont. New West fell to Mouat 65-59 on Friday, then were edged 65-58 by Claremont a day later to place 12th overall at the vaunted Centennial-hosted tourney. In the final battle against Claremont, sisters Emma and Sara Forgie led the offence, with Grade 12 Emma counting 15 points and Grade 10 guard Sara scoring a team-high 21. Earlier in the tournament, New West began its march with a tough 74-40 loss to No. 5-rated Riverside but bounced back to upend No. 10-ranked Handsworth 59-53, thanks to a 29-point performance from Sara Forgie. Rhiannon Leidl and Madisen Obrovac contributed 10 points apiece in the win. The Hyacks record now stands at 10-5.
